More face-to-face help brought into North Lincolnshire’s rural communities

Comments Off on More face-to-face help brought into North Lincolnshire’s rural communities

Residents facing financial difficulties in Barton, Brigg, Crowle, Epworth and Winterton can now get free, face-to-face advice in their own communities.

North Lincolnshire Council has chosen to invest in Citizens Advice North Lincolnshire taking weekly sessions into community hubs across the area, reducing the need for residents to travel into Scunthorpe to get help. They will be available to explain what financial help is available through the Crisis Resilience Fund for people who have suffered a financial setback.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Living outside Scunthorpe should not make it harder to get good advice when you need it.

“We have chosen to invest in taking this support directly into North Lincolnshire’s towns and rural communities, making it easier for residents to sit down with somebody locally and find a way forward.

“This is about delivering practical support close to home and ensuring communities across North Lincolnshire benefit from the services in which we invest.”

Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “This investment will give residents in rural communities regular access to trusted, specialist advice without facing an unnecessary journey.

“It will help people tackle problems earlier, understand their options and build greater security and resilience.”

Sessions are available at:

  • Barton Community Hub: Mondays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Brigg Community Hub: Fridays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Crowle Community Hub: Thursdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Epworth Community Hub: Thursdays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Winterton Community Hub: Mondays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Ashby Community Hub: Tuesdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Scunthorpe Central: Fridays, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm

The additional support forms part of the council’s Community Resilience Fund programme.

Council leader calls for banking hub in Ashby

Comments Off on Council leader calls for banking hub in Ashby

The leader of North Lincolnshire Council has called for a banking hub to be established in Ashby to serve people in Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens.

Cllr Rob Waltham has written to LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, asking for a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.

Ashby Central and Ashby Lakeside alone have a combined population of more than 16,000, with the wider catchment taking the potential population served to well over 30,000.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Ashby is a major centre serving a large and growing population, but residents and businesses no longer have access to a bank branch there.

“A banking hub would support residents, help local businesses manage cash and strengthen an already important shopping and service centre.”

The council has told LINK it is willing to provide further evidence on population, retail activity, transport links and potential locations for a hub.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member community wellbeing urban (Ashby, Bottesford and Scunthorpe) said: “We have already seen in Brigg and Barton how banking hubs can provide a practical solution when communities lose traditional bank branches.

“Ashby now deserves the same consideration. It has the population, the retail centre and the wider catchment to make a strong case for a hub of its own.”

The council already provides free parking in Ashby, making it easier for residents to access local shops and services, with hundreds of thousands of free two-hour parking sessions used each year.

Cllr Waltham added: “We have made a commitment to back independent retailers and local centres across North Lincolnshire. Free parking is part of that, and attracting services such as banking hubs is another important part of keeping places like Ashby thriving.

“We want people to be able to shop locally, use local services and support local businesses without having to travel elsewhere for essential services.”

Residents urged to back Ashby banking hub campaign

Comments Off on Residents urged to back Ashby banking hub campaign

People across Ashby and surrounding communities are being urged to back the campaign for a new banking hub.

The council has already asked LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, to carry out a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.

A hub could serve people across Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens – a potential catchment of more than 30,000 people.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We believe there is a really strong case for a banking hub in Ashby and now we want residents and businesses to help us demonstrate the level of local support.

“It takes less than a minute to add your name. The more people who back the campaign, the stronger the message we can send that people want convenient access to banking services in this part of North Lincolnshire.

“We have already seen the difference banking hubs can make in Brigg and Barton. Ashby has a large population, a busy retail centre and a wide catchment, and we want LINK to give that case serious consideration.”

Cllr Andrea Davison, ward member for Ashby, said: “We used to have banks on Ashby High Street and the problems we saw when the Post Office temporarily closed showed just how important local access to these services still is.

“Not everybody banks online and people need somewhere they can go face to face. A banking hub would make a massive difference for local residents, shoppers and businesses.”

There is currently no bank branch in Ashby. The council has argued that the area meets a number of the factors LINK considers when assessing the need for additional banking services, including population, retail activity, public transport and journey times to alternative provision.

For residents reliant on public transport, access to the remaining banking facilities in Scunthorpe town centre is already well beyond LINK’s 15-minute benchmark. A scheduled bus journey from Bottesford to Scunthorpe Bus Station, for example, takes around 25 minutes, before waiting time and the onward journey to a bank branch are taken into account.

Brigg’s banking hub has already had 4,877 residents visit this month already and transacted almost £1m since opening.

Residents and businesses can back the campaign here.

No young person left behind: Council leader strengthens support into work and training

Comments Off on No young person left behind: Council leader strengthens support into work and training

Every young person in North Lincolnshire deserves the opportunity to build a successful future – and North Lincolnshire Council is set to strengthen the help available.

The plans would bring together schools, colleges, employers, the Department for Work and Pensions, health partners and the voluntary sector to ensure young people receive the right support at the right time.

They build on a strong local track record. While nationally around four per cent of 16 and 17-year-olds are not in education, employment or training, in North Lincolnshire that figure is less than two per cent.

The council now wants to go further by strengthening partnership working and expanding the support available to young people.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a personal priority for me. Every young person deserves the chance to succeed, and we are determined that nobody slips through the net.

“National policies have made it harder for businesses to employ people, particularly young people. That makes it even more important that we step up locally, create opportunities and ensure no young person is left behind.

“We already have a strong network of schools, colleges, employers and organisations supporting young people every day. We are choosing to invest further in those partnerships, making sure organisations work more closely together so that young people receive the support they need as early as possible.

“Whether that’s an apprenticeship, further education, training or a first job, we want every young person to know there is an opportunity for them and people ready to help them take that next step.”

The details are set out in a report due to be discussed by the Cabinet. The plans build on North Lincolnshire’s Youth Hub, which has supported almost 1,000 young people over the past five years, helping hundreds into paid employment while many others have progressed into apprenticeships, training, work experience and further learning.

The proposals also include a new intensive programme for young people not in education, employment or training, alongside expanded employability workshops, work experience placements, careers events and sector-based training.

If approved, they will strengthen partnership working to identify young people who need support earlier, remove barriers to opportunity and help more young people move into education, training or employment across North Lincolnshire.

Cllr Waltham added: “Success will be measured by one thing – more young people fulfilling their potential, more local businesses finding the skilled workforce they need and fewer young people left behind.”

If you’re a parent, carer, grandparent or young person looking for help with education, training or employment, visit your local Community Hub in Ashby, Barton-upon-Humber, Brigg, Crowle, Epworth or Scunthorpe. Friendly staff can offer advice, answer questions and help you access the right support.
